“The time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will accumulate teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear something new. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4).
Paul was telling Timothy that in the future, and even during Timothy’s time, people would turn away from hearing the truth about God, salvation, Biblical history, etc. and instead listen to everything else. This is what we see today. There are countless world religions and philosophies. The Age of Enlightenment sparked a wide-scale exodus away from Biblical truths. New Age and occult practice are becoming more rampant, tearing people away from Jesus and sending them on a path of destruction. The Theory of Evolution is another distraction from God’s truth. It teaches that all life is a random accident and there is no purpose other than to survive and pass on our genes. Many preachers today are more focused on being seeker-sensitive, growing the church numerically, pursuing social justice, hyper-emotionalism, and ecumenicalism. More and more we see a decline in solid, Biblical teaching, and the message of cross is rarely heard
This was a problem in Timothy’s time, and it’s an ever-increasing problem today. Ensure your church teaches from the Bible. Take notes during the service and check up on what your pastor taught. Be like the Bereans (Acts 17:11) and search the Scriptures to verify the truth.
